Gas Compression

Gas Gathering and Processing Lubricants

NEXT Lubricants supplies compressor lubricants for gas gathering and processing applications across wellhead compression, field gathering networks, NGL extraction, gas dehydration and condensate stabilisation. Product selection is based on gas composition, liquids content, H₂S and CO₂ levels, operating pressure and the specific conditions at the point of compression within the gathering or processing system.

Lubrication Considerations for Gas Gathering & Processing

Gas gathered from production wells is typically raw, wet and variable — containing heavier hydrocarbons, moisture, H₂S, CO₂ and other contaminants at concentrations that shift depending on the reservoir, production stage and seasonal conditions. These characteristics create more demanding lubrication conditions than clean pipeline gas and require careful consideration during lubricant selection.

High Liquids Content & Condensation Risk

Gas at the gathering stage often carries significant quantities of entrained liquids — water, condensate and heavier hydrocarbon fractions — that can accumulate at the compressor inlet or condense within the compressor under certain operating conditions. Liquid carry-over washes lubricant from cylinder walls and increases wear risk, making lubricant selection and suction conditions particularly important in wet gas gathering applications.

Variable H₂S & CO₂ Content

Gathered gas from sour reservoirs or mixed production areas may contain H₂S and CO₂ at levels that vary across the gathering network and over the producing life of the field. Lubricant compatibility with H₂S and acidic gas conditions must be considered at the specific concentrations encountered at the point of compression, which may change as field conditions evolve.

Variable Gas Composition

Gas composition in gathering and processing systems can vary significantly between fields, wells and operating conditions. Methane content, heavier hydrocarbons, CO₂, H₂S and other contaminants may fluctuate over time, affecting gas density, solubility and lubricant behaviour in the compressor. Lubricant selection should account for the range of gas conditions the compressor will encounter across its operating life.

Variable Operating Conditions

Gas gathering compressors often handle variable flow and pressure conditions as production rates change across the gathering area and over time. Lubricant selection must account for the range of gas compositions and operating conditions the compressor will encounter across its operating life rather than a single fixed design point.
