Barrier Fluid Considerations for Dual Mechanical Seal Systems

Barrier fluid for a dual mechanical seal must maintain stable viscosity and lubricity at the seal face operating temperature, remain compatible with both seal face materials and elastomers, and be safe to handle in the event of outer seal leakage. In food, pharmaceutical or other regulated applications, the barrier fluid chemistry may be subject to additional constraints governing permitted ingredients or contact safety.

Thermal Stability & Viscosity at Operating Temperature

The barrier fluid must maintain adequate viscosity at the seal chamber operating temperature throughout its service life — thermal degradation over time reduces lubricity at the seal faces and increases the risk of seal face wear and premature failure.
