Lubrication Considerations for Automotive A/C Systems

Automotive A/C lubricants circulate with the refrigerant throughout the entire system — they must remain fully miscible with the refrigerant across all operating temperatures, compatible with system materials including seals, hoses and heat exchangers, and present at the correct concentration to lubricate the compressor without impairing system heat transfer.

Refrigerant Compatibility

Lubricant type is determined by the refrigerant — PAG lubricants are standard for R134a and R1234yf systems, with specific viscosity grades and formulations matched to the compressor manufacturer's specification. R744 (CO₂) and electric compressor systems have distinct lubricant requirements.

Electric Compressor Lubrication

Electrically driven A/C compressors in hybrid and battery electric vehicles require lubricants with low electrical conductivity in addition to standard refrigerant compatibility and lubrication performance — standard PAG lubricants are not suitable for electric compressor applications.

System Condition & Additives
