HFC & HFO Refrigeration Compressor Lubricants
NEXT Lubricants supplies compressor lubricants for HFC and HFO refrigeration systems across commercial refrigeration, industrial cooling, cold storage and air conditioning applications. Product selection is based on the specific refrigerant, compressor type, operating temperature range and the viscosity grade specified by the compressor manufacturer.
Knowledge
Lubrication Considerations for HFC & HFO Refrigeration
HFC and HFO refrigerants require lubricants that are specifically matched to the refrigerant chemistry — mineral oils and alkylbenzenes used with older CFC refrigerants are not compatible with most HFC and HFO systems.
Refrigerant-Lubricant Miscibility
HFC refrigerants — including R134a, R404A, R507, R448A and R449A — require POE (polyol ester) lubricants that are miscible with the refrigerant throughout the system, supporting oil return from evaporators and maintaining adequate lubrication across the full operating temperature range. HFO refrigerants including R1234yf and R1234ze similarly require compatible POE lubricants selected for the specific refrigerant chemistry and operating conditions.
Operating Temperature Range
HFC and HFO refrigeration systems operate across a wide range of evaporating temperatures — from medium-temperature commercial refrigeration above -10°C through to low-temperature industrial and food processing applications well below -30°C. Lubricant viscosity grade must be matched to the evaporating temperature of the specific application to ensure adequate oil return and compressor protection at low-side conditions.
Moisture Sensitivity
POE lubricants used in HFC and HFO systems are hygroscopic — they absorb moisture from the atmosphere readily. Moisture contamination in a POE-lubricated HFC system can cause acid formation, compressor damage and system reliability issues. Correct handling, storage and system assembly procedures are important practical considerations alongside lubricant selection in HFC and HFO refrigeration service.
