Lubrication Considerations for LNG Infrastructure

LNG infrastructure involves some of the most demanding compressor duties in the gas industry — combining cryogenic or near-cryogenic conditions, high operating pressures and continuous duty in facilities where compressor availability directly determines plant output.

Cryogenic & Sub-Ambient Operating Conditions

Compressors in LNG liquefaction refrigerant circuits and boil-off gas handling operate under sub-ambient or near-cryogenic suction conditions. Lubricant behaviour at low inlet temperatures — including viscosity, fluidity and film formation at cold startup — is a primary consideration alongside performance at normal operating conditions.

Gas Purity & Lubricant Carry-Over

Natural gas and refrigerant streams in LNG facilities are processed to high purity specifications. Lubricant carry-over into the process gas or refrigerant stream is undesirable for both process and equipment protection reasons, making oil separation performance and lubricant volatility relevant design considerations in LNG compressor applications.

Continuous Duty & Reliability Requirements

LNG liquefaction trains and terminal compressors operate continuously in facilities where unplanned downtime carries major operational and commercial consequences. Lubricant stability under sustained operating conditions and extended service life between planned maintenance intervals are important practical requirements alongside technical compatibility.
