Barrier Seal System
Compressor Seal System Barrier Fluids
Compressor wet seal systems require a pressurised barrier fluid to prevent process gas from escaping along the compressor shaft — and barrier fluid selection is as critical to seal reliability as the mechanical seal design itself. NEXT Lubricants supplies barrier fluids for compressor seal systems across natural gas pipeline, refinery, petrochemical, sour gas and offshore compression applications.

Barrier Fluid Considerations for Compressor Seal Systems
Process Gas Compatibility
The barrier fluid contacts the process gas at the inner seal face — compatibility between the fluid chemistry and the specific gas composition at the compressor must be assessed, particularly in sour gas, reactive gas or chemically aggressive service where standard fluid chemistry may be inadequate.
Thermal Stability at Seal Operating Conditions
Barrier fluid circulates continuously through the seal chamber and support system at operating temperature — thermal and oxidative stability determine how long the fluid remains in service before requiring replacement and how consistently it protects the seal faces throughout.
Viscosity & Lubricity at Operating Conditions
The fluid must maintain adequate viscosity and lubricity at the seal face operating temperature and pressure to protect the seal face materials from wear across the full range of compressor operating conditions including startup and shutdown.
