Gas Compression

CO₂ Compression Lubricants

NEXT Lubricants supplies compressor lubricants for CO₂ process gas compression across carbon capture and storage, enhanced oil recovery, industrial CO₂ supply, urea production feedstock and food-grade CO₂ applications. Product selection is based on operating pressure, CO₂ purity level and the specific compression duty of the installation.

Knowledge

Lubrication Considerations for CO₂ Compression

CO₂ process gas compression involves operating conditions that differ significantly from most other gas compression applications — particularly with respect to operating pressure and gas behaviour under compression.

High Operating Pressures

CO₂ compression for pipeline transport, EOR injection and CCS applications involves very high operating pressures — often well above those encountered in conventional gas compression. At these pressures CO₂ transitions to dense-phase or supercritical conditions, where its behaviour as a working fluid differs significantly from gas-phase compression and influences lubricant performance throughout the compression system.

CO₂ Solubility in the Lubricant

CO₂ dissolves readily into compressor lubricants under elevated operating pressures, reducing lubricant viscosity in the oil-CO₂ mixture within the compression system. The extent of this effect increases with operating pressure and is a key consideration in lubricant selection for high-pressure CO₂ compression duties.

Gas Purity Requirements

CO₂ compression for food-grade, beverage and pharmaceutical applications places strict limits on lubricant carry-over into the gas stream. In CCS applications, CO₂ streams may contain impurities including moisture, SOx or NOx depending on the capture source, influencing lubricant compatibility and the demands placed on the compression system.
