BArrier Seal Systems

Dual Mechnical Seal Systems

Dual mechanical seals are the standard sealing solution for pumps and rotating equipment handling hazardous, toxic or high-value process fluids — providing a secondary containment barrier that prevents process fluid from reaching the atmosphere even if the inner seal fails. The barrier fluid circulating between the two seal faces is as critical to seal performance and reliability as the mechanical design itself.

NEXT Lubricants supplies barrier fluids for dual mechanical seal systems across chemical processing, oil refining, pharmaceutical, water treatment and general industrial rotating equipment applications.

Dual Mechanical Seal Systems — Operation, Applications & Barrier Fluid Role

A dual mechanical seal consists of two sets of seal faces arranged in series around the shaft, with a barrier fluid filling the space between them. In a pressurised arrangement (API Plan 53), the barrier fluid is maintained at a pressure above the process fluid — preventing any process leakage past the inner seal face and ensuring the barrier fluid, not the process fluid, contacts the atmosphere side of the seal. In an unpressurised arrangement (API Plan 52), the barrier fluid acts as a buffer, capturing any inner seal leakage before it can reach the environment.

The barrier fluid must lubricate and cool the seal faces continuously, remain stable across the operating temperature range of the seal chamber, and be compatible with both the seal materials and any process fluid it may contact through inner seal leakage. In hazardous or toxic service, the barrier fluid itself must also be safe to handle in the event of outer seal leakage — meaning its chemistry is an important selection consideration alongside viscosity, thermal stability and lubricity. Barrier fluid condition monitoring and regular top-up or replacement are standard maintenance requirements for dual mechanical seal systems in continuous service.

Chemical & Petrochemical Processing

Pumps handling aggressive, toxic or flammable process chemicals in chemical plants and refineries use dual mechanical seals with barrier fluids selected for compatibility with the specific process fluid and seal materials in the application.

Water & Wastewater Treatment

High-duty pumps in water treatment, desalination and wastewater facilities use dual mechanical seals where process fluid contamination of the environment or barrier system must be prevented across continuous, high-cycle pump operation.

Pharmaceutical & Food Processing

Pumps in pharmaceutical manufacturing and food processing use dual mechanical seals where product purity, contamination prevention and compliance with hygiene and safety standards govern both seal design and barrier fluid selection.

General Industrial Rotating Equipment

Pumps and agitators across a wide range of industrial applications use dual mechanical seals as the standard solution for shaft sealing in services where single mechanical seals or gland packing do not meet the containment or reliability requirements of the installation.
