Lubrication Considerations for Ammonia & Urea Production
Synthesis Gas Compression at Very High Pressures
The synthesis gas compressor is the most critical machine in the ammonia plant, compressing a hydrogen and nitrogen mixture to operating pressures of 150–300 bar across multiple stages in continuous operation. The combination of hydrogen-rich gas and very high operating pressures creates demanding conditions for both the compressor and lubricant throughout the synthesis loop.
Hydrogen Behaviour Under Compression
Hydrogen's low molecular weight and high diffusivity mean it behaves differently from hydrocarbon gases under compression — it can permeate seals and influence lubricant behaviour at the high-pressure conditions of synthesis loop compression. Lubricant compatibility with hydrogen at operating conditions is a relevant consideration in synthesis gas compressor lubricant selection.
Multiple Distinct Compression Duties
Ammonia and urea plants involve several separate compression duties — synthesis gas, CO₂ for the urea reactor and ammonia vapour in the refrigeration circuit — each handling a different gas at different pressures and temperatures. Lubricant selection must account for the specific duty rather than applying a single product across all compression points in the plant.
