Lubrication Considerations for Oil-Free Air Compressors

Although the compression element itself is lubricant-free, oil-free compressors contain gearboxes, timing gear sets, main bearings and in some designs water or coolant injection systems — all of which require specific lubricants to operate reliably. Lubricant selection for these components must account for the operating speeds and loads of the compressor design, thermal conditions in the compressor housing and any risk of lubricant migration toward the compression element.

Gearbox & Timing Gear Lubrication

Oil-free screw compressors use precision timing gears to synchronise the counter-rotating rotors without contact — these gear sets and their bearings require lubricants with the viscosity and load-carrying capacity suited to the gear design and operating speed of the compressor.

Bearing Lubrication

Main shaft bearings in oil-free compressors operate at elevated temperatures and speeds, requiring lubricants with appropriate viscosity, thermal stability and oxidation resistance for the bearing design and duty cycle of the installation.

Cooling System Fluids

Some oil-free compressor designs use water or coolant injection for compression element cooling — requiring compatible coolant chemistry that does not affect compression element materials or downstream compressed air quality.
