Air Compression

Oil-Free Air Compressors

Oil-free air compressors are specified wherever the quality of compressed air is critical — in food and beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics, medical applications and any process where hydrocarbon contamination of the air supply is unacceptable. Unlike oil-injected compressors, oil-free designs compress air without lubricant contact in the compression chamber, delivering technically oil-free air to the downstream process.

NEXT Lubricants supports oil-free air compressor applications with lubricants developed for the gearbox, bearing and cooling system lubrication requirements of oil-free screw, scroll and piston compressor designs.

Oil-Free Air Compressors — Process, Applications & Compressor Role

Oil-free compression is achieved by separating the lubricant entirely from the compression chamber — through precision-machined non-contacting rotor profiles in oil-free screw compressors, through scroll element geometry in scroll compressors, or through PTFE-coated piston rings in oil-free reciprocating designs. The result is compressed air with no hydrocarbon contamination from the compression element itself — meeting the requirements of ISO 8573-1 Class 0 oil-free air where required by the application or end user.

Although the compression chamber contains no lubricant, oil-free compressors still require lubrication in their gearboxes, bearings, cooling systems and ancillary equipment. These lubrication points operate under the mechanical loads of the compression duty and must be maintained with appropriate lubricants matched to the compressor design and operating conditions — separate from the compressed air stream but essential to compressor reliability and service life.

Food & Beverage Production

Food processing, beverage production, dairy, brewing and packaging operations use oil-free compressed air for direct product contact applications — conveying, filling, blowing and packaging — where hydrocarbon contamination of the air supply would affect product safety or quality.

Pharmaceutical & Healthcare

Pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical device production and healthcare facilities require oil-free compressed air for process applications, instrument air and breathing air systems where product integrity and patient safety depend on contamination-free air supply.

Electronics & Semiconductor

Electronics assembly, semiconductor fabrication and precision manufacturing use oil-free air for component handling, cleanroom environments and process equipment where even trace hydrocarbon contamination can affect product yield and reliability.

Critical Process Applications

Chemical, analytical laboratory, textile and other process applications where compressed air contacts the product or process directly, or where downstream purification systems require oil-free inlet air to function correctly.
